Six former Holyoke High School athletes were honored on Saturday, October 26, during a banquet sponsored by the Holyoke High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.
This year’s inductees include:
Michael Athas, Class of 2000, who earned eight varsity letters while attending Holyoke High School, was captain of the boys soccer, basketball, and baseball teams, and the second-leading scorer in the Churchill-Moriarty League with 12 goals and two assists;
Nate Hernandez, Class of 2007, who helped Dean Tech make its first appearance in the Massachusetts Small School Vocational championship against Nashoba Valley Tech and was nominated to the All-Western Mass. first-team;
Chris Legowski, Class of 1992, who finished with 80 goals and 20 assists in 47 games, finishing high school as Dean Tech’s all-time leading scorer in only three seasons and named the D-III Player of the Year by the Western Mass. High School Soccer Coaches Association;
Kate McKenna, Class of 2006, who earned 11 varsity letters and was named captain of the girls soccer, basketball, and track and field teams who finished with 25 career goals en route to being nominated an All-State member during her junior and senior seasons;
Max Perez, Class of 2003, who helped the Holyoke boys’ basketball team defend its regional crown in 2000 and was named on the All-Western Mass. second team during his sophomore and junior seasons and was added to the Springfield Republican’s “Super 7 players to watch” list; and
Selena Yates, Class of 2012, who is considered Holyoke’s most celebrated track athlete ever, recognized as the area's top sprinter, and was undefeated in the 100 and 200-meter regular-season races before claiming honors in the regional championship.
